Blyth Academy

Private Studies Program- Senior Level Teachers


Blyth Academy gives students the opportunity to enroll in courses where they are the sole learner in the classroom. Students will benefit from personalized instruction, which has been tailored to their needs. The Private Studies Program gives teachers the opportunity to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of their subject area, while creating dynamic and experiential lessons. This gives teachers the opportunity to facilitate their student’s learning by focusing on the strategies that work best for them, and only them.

We are seeking highly qualified teachers for our Private Studies Program to teach the following subjects: Math, Science (Chemistry, Physics, and Biology), English, French, and Computer Science. We have opportunities in the Private Studies Program during the day, in the evenings, and on weekends. Principal Blyth Academy Florence


Blyth Academy is seeking a principal for its newest high school opening in Florence, Italy in September 2016. The successful candidate will be a proven educational leader with a permanent Alberta teaching certificate and have a demonstrated passion for international education and the development of global citizens.

This position is to support Blyth Academy’s international growth by creating an academic program that provides location relevant, challenging, effective, well-rounded, experiential education for students attending Blyth Academy Florence.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Direct the management of the Alberta program
  • Provide instructional leadership in the Alberta program
  • Evaluate all programs
  • Develop and implement the programs of study based on the Alberta Curriculum Outcomes
  • Ensure instruction is consistent with the approved programs of study
  • Supervise the evaluation and advancement of students in the Alberta program
  • Ensure standards of education are met
  • Promote cooperation between the Alberta program and the school community
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate teachers in the Alberta program
  • With written permission from the Registrar, Professional Standards Branch, assist the Designated Signing authority with the evaluation of a teacher who holds an Interim Professional Certificate to gain a Permanent Professional Certificate
  • Through regular meetings with faculty ensure that there is frequent review of curriculum content and regular assessment of the academic program
  • Provide professional development and mentorship opportunities for all faculty
  • Implement system of regular assessments and feedback of teaching faculty and a mechanism to allow this to improve professional practice
  • Develop a warm, welcoming, inclusive and safe school environment for all students, faculty and community members
  • Responsible for developing all policies and procedures for the school including faculty and student handbooks in compliance with the standards and policies of Blyth Academy and Alberta Education
  • In conjunction with the guidance counselor, create schedules for teachers and students
  • Work in conjunction with guidance counselor and faculty to provide a high standard of support for all students in academic and post-secondary, personal and social counseling
  • Oversee Alberta Student Records for each student, PASI updating, report card production and distribution
  • Support faculty in using technology to enhance student learning and encourage faculty to be innovative and cutting edge in their approach to education
  • Manage school budget in conjunction with staff at Blyth Academy Head Office
  • Engage in regular community outreach, develop community partners and work to make Blyth Academy Florence a positive contributor to its community
  • Supervise and or assist with all other aspects of the schools operation, such as facilities maintenance and operation, food service, transportation, summer programs, fundraising and alumni affairs
  • Work with Blyth Academy Head Office on marketing the school effectively and on admissions
  • Participate as a member ex officio of all standing committees of the Blyth Academy Florence Board
  • Maintain a working knowledge of local government regulations as they pertain to running the school as well as keeping up to do date with Alberta Education policy changes and updates

Qualifications and Qualities:

  • A valid Alberta permanent Professional Certificate
  • Minimum 3 years of educational administration experience
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience in Alberta, and/or in an Alberta accredited international school
  • Current Alberta leadership or Alberta educational administration experience (within the past ten years)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated passion for international education and development of global citizens
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate in Italian an asset but not required

Guidance Counsellor


Reports to: Principal

Locations: Various

Primary Role: Responsible for supporting student’s academic and career needs through the delivery of timely and excellent secondary and post-secondary counselling on course selection and university/college placement. Responsible for enlisting community resources as required in support of student needs. Responsible for counseling students on social and personal issues as appropriate.

Job Details:

  • Support and counsel students (and parents) on the post secondary application process
  • Counsel all students grade 9-12 on secondary course selection over four terms
  • Manage the Ontario University Applications (OUAC), Ontario College Applications (OCAS) and support students interested in other Canadian post secondary options
  • Assist students interested in International post-secondary applications
  • Work with teachers, parents and students on overcoming student problems
  • Oversee the application of student IEP’s, support teachers and students as necessary, update IEP’s
  • Undertake guidance administrative work such as transcript, data entry, etc
  • Oversee the maintenance of the OSR’s
  • Assist the Principal in course scheduling and timetabling
  • Assist with admissions, interviews and follow-up as needed
  • Assist with Academy presentations and parent teacher interviews
  • Compile a list of Community Resources for students and recommend as needed
  • Handling inquires as needed concerning full, part-time and private studies

International Education

Visual Art, English, History Teachers

The setting for our Global High School program includes the natural, historic, artistic and scientific wonders of European countries like England, France, Italy and Greece then on to Australia and New Zealand finally ending in South and Central America.

Academic Director: Global High School

Primary Role: The role of the Academic Director: Global High School is to manage the day-to-day running of the program on the ground, and to oversee the academic integrity and student and staff welfare on the program. In this role, the Academic Director, in consultation with the Program Manager,  will be responsible for creating a caring and empathetic environment where students will thrive. An interest in travel, health, nutrition, experiential and outdoor education is preferable.  A second language would be an asset.

Job Details:

Reporting directly to the Head of Global High School and indirectly to the Principal, Global High School. The Academic Director will be responsible for:

  • Managing teachers, ensuring course outlines, profiles, exams and standards of evaluation are in accordance with Growing Success and Ministry guidelines
  • Returning course packages, including student work, assessments and exams are returned to Head Office at the end of the semester (both terms)
  • Overseeing the Student Information System for each term, including teacher grade books and report card comments
  • Ensuring compliance with all Blyth Academy related policies and procedures as they affect the program
  • Maintaining appropriate liaison with parents over the two terms
  • Attending Orientation Programs, Presentation Evenings, and other special events
  • Working closely with the Program Manager and Assistant Guidance Counsellor to ensure a healthy and active program

The successful candidate will have:

  • Ontario qualified teacher in good standing
  • 6 years of prior experience at the high school level
  • Experience on over-night trips with students
  • Experience with international travel
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Passion for experiential, hands-on learning

This is a contract position for one semester.

Global High School will travel to England, Spain, France, Italy and Greece in Semester 1.

Global High School will travel to Australia, New Zealand and Central & South America in Semester 2.

 

Guidance Counselor and Student Support: Global High School


Reports to: Head of Global High School and Blyth Academy Director of Guidance

Primary Role: Responsible for supporting student’s academic and career needs through the delivery of timely and excellent secondary and post-secondary counselling university/college placement and providing individual support in personal development to position these students for success in the program.

Job Details:

  • Support and counsel students (and parents) on the post-secondary application process
  • Counsel students on course choices on each Global High School term
  • Manage the Ontario University Applications (OUAC), Ontario College Applications (OCAS) and support students interested in other Canadian post secondary options
  • Assist students interested in International post-secondary applications

  • As part of the health and wellness program, work with the Program Manager to plan and deliver workshops that focus on developing positive group dynamics and social skill development

  • Mentor, coach and support individual students to facilitate personal, social and educational growth and work with the group on social inclusion
  • Mitigate and address crisis situations related to the health and wellness of students.
  • Assess and document the individual needs of the students that arise in discussions
  • Work in partnership with the rest of the GHS staff and communicating regularly with parents to address student needs
  • Undertake administrative tasks, maintain effective recording systems and respond to queries from parents and head office
  • Work with the Blyth Academy Director of Guidance to update application status, courses, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Global High School

Blyth Academy is seeking experienced educators to develop grade 9-12 Ontario curriculum online courses in the areas of English, Math, Social Studies, and the Humanities for its fast growing Online school. Expected turnaround time for one course will be approximately 8 weeks.
