Local students at Blyth Academy Mississauga Cawthra Estate came in first and second at a HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) conference on Friday March 4th, 2016. Students participated in two events: a PSA competition where they came in second and a medical reading competition, where Jenna Nensi came in first out of one hundred students. Students were awarded their first and second place medals on Friday evening at the HOSA awards ceremony.
Students at Blyth Academy Mississauga Cawthra Estate have been working rigorously at preparing for the Health Occupations Students of America conference that occurred this past Friday. Since January, students have been reading medical books to prepare for HOSA’s medical reading exam and have planned for their Public Service Announcement competitions. With the help of Robert Kovanchak (staff sponsor) and Tania Freire (Head of Lower School, Cawthra Estate), students were prepare for their events. This led to the success of Jenna Nensi, first place winner in Medical Reading and second place for Sebastian Smith, Anne Petersen, Austin Miller and Connor Ryan in the PSA competition.
- “It was a great experience. I enjoyed learning about science and appreciated the experience that HOSA provided me,” said Connor Ryan.
- “Being around people that are interested in the same field as I am is inspiring. I am thankful for the opportunity HOSA provided me,” said Jenna Nensi.
- “I truly benefitted from my experience at HOSA and enjoyed learning about future career opportunities in medical science,” said Austin Miller.
- “HOSA was a great experience and I was proud of the medal that our team won,” said Anne Petersen.
The staff and students were all pleasantly surprised at the HOSA team’s winnings. They were happy that their peers were able to achieve such amazing results and represent Blyth Academy Cawthra Estate in such a positive way.
- “I felt that HOSA was a great learning experience for the grade ten students and that it provided them with insight into post-secondary options. I am also pleased that the student’s efforts were rewarded and that they were successful in their events,” said Robert Kovanchak, staff advisor.
- “I was amazed at all of the hard work that our students put in and that they were able to achieve such amazing results. I am very proud of the HOSA team,” said Tania Freire.
The principal of Blyth Academy Mississauga, Michael Booth, was also extremely proud of the student’s initiatives. He said, “This was a great initiative and the students truly rose to the occasion.”
The five students who participated in HOSA will not be moving onto the Nashville competition from June 23rd – June 25th, 2016.
