Parent Communication/Student Support

Parent Communication

At Blyth Academy Downsview Park, we pride ourselves on maintaining open lines of communication between teaching and administration staff, and our parents, in both a formal and informal way.

Formal Communication

Our campus provides four opportunities a year for parents to meet formally with teachers during our Parent Teacher Evenings. These evenings are held halfway through each term and give an opportunity to formally discuss a student’s progress. At the conclusion of every term, parents will receive a full report card, outlining the student’s success over the past 10 and a half weeks.

Parents also receive full access to our grading and reporting system, Rediker, allowing you to track your student’s progress, grades, and attendance in real time.

Rediker Reporting

Blyth Academy uses the Rediker online system to keep parents and students up to date on all grades and class attendance on an ongoing basis. This program is an excellent way to allow parents to monitor a student’s academic performance quickly and easily.

Informal Communication

Every Administrator, Head of School, Guidance Counsellor and Teacher at Blyth Academy adheres to our open-door policy, giving each parent access to phone, email, or face-to-face conversation throughout the school year. We are readily available to listen to any questions or concerns and to provide ongoing communication throughout each term.

Student Support

Our campus has a dedicated and compassionate guidance counsellor that provides course selection advice, emotional support, access to workshops and skill improvement resources, as well as university preparation, selection, university visits, and application advice.

Blyth Academy has an average of one guidance counsellor for every 70 students; other public and private high schools average between 200 – 400+ students for every counsellor. This allows our guidance counsellors to provide individual attention and relate to students on a personal basis, providing ongoing advice throughout the school experience.

Student life at Blyth Academy is structured to provide a well-rounded educational experience. While academic success and student growth are our top priorities, we want to ensure that students also enjoy their time in this energetic and vibrant environment. From intramural sports teams and gym groups, volunteering and workshops, to clubs and coffee houses, Blyth Academy students are offered a wide-range of unique extracurricular activities. Students are encouraged to take leadership positions in the school and create clubs and activities that appeal to them.

Teaching Faculty

The most inspired teachers create inspired learners. Blyth Academy teachers are chosen for their empathy, compassion, and ability to connect with students. Our teachers must pass a rigorous selection process and excel in their continuous assessments in order to teach at Blyth Academy.

Our faculty is the key to the success of our program and students. Blyth Academy attracts thousands of teacher applications every year, allowing us to be very selective. We also constantly evaluate and review existing faculty.

Our teachers are selected for their excellent teaching skills, their depth of knowledge, and their ability to empathize and encourage students. They are familiar and up to date with current Ministry of Education curriculum and assessment policies, and also have the skills to provide support for students who require learning accommodations. All Blyth Academy teachers bring a passion, creativity, and dedication to the success of each student to every class.

Our teachers, on average, instruct 15–25 students each day in two or three classes. This is an astounding ratio when compared to traditional Canadian high schools, where teachers may see upwards of 100 students in a day. At Blyth Academy, teachers have the time, energy and dedication to devote themselves to the individual student and to provide extra help before and after class.

When asked why they do better at Blyth Academy, students frequently respond by saying that they feel a sense of personal respect for – and responsibility to – the teacher.

Lower School (Grade 5-8)

About our Lower School Programs

Your child’s Blyth Academy journey begins in our Lower School program, where academic excellence and compassionate student care intersect to prepare our youngest students for success.

It is often overwhelming to think of our Grade 5–8 students as university-bound, but they indeed are! The Blyth Academy Lower School Program immerses students into an academic setting reminiscent of the very best post-secondary institutions; very small class sizes (averaging under eight students), roundtable discussions as opposed to desk-based lessons, and rich, experiential learning opportunities outside of the classroom introduce students to this new way of learning.

Students will begin to gain confidence as they transition from the more rigid school environment to the Blyth Academy model, where students are encouraged to participate, where every seat is a front row seat, and no-one is left behind. The class environment is highly interactive as teachers are able to fully engage in meaningful discussion and give individual attention. The Blyth Academy model has been proven year after year to increase academic success through constant feedback and the ability to customize learning to the individual, something that is impossible in a larger classroom setting.

Participation builds confidence, self-esteem, and empathy, valuable life skills that form the foundation of a happy, engaged, and academically successful child who is heard and understood.

Lower School Program Facilities

In addition to our well-equipped facilities at each of our campuses, our Lower School Program campuses feature large, bright classrooms, a dedicated Lower School lunch room, lockers, access to on-site physical education areas, and convenient pick-up and drop-off areas.

Lower School Academics

Blyth Academy Lower School students enjoy the entire Ontario curriculum, including a rich arts, music, drama, physical education, and health program, in a standard eight-class day. Each class lasts 45 minutes, after which assignments and other homework are presented.

Blyth Academy is ministry inspected, and adheres to all provincial standards, including the provision of an Ontario Provincial Report Card and official transcripts to post-secondary institutions. University Prep Program (Grade 9-12)

A student’s journey with Blyth Academy culminates in the University Preparation Program for Grades 11 and 12. Here, preparing for post-secondary education is the primary focus, with increased focus on developing opinions, interpreting information, independent learning, and active participation in our small-group setting.

Experienced guidance counsellors work weekly with each student to prepare them for the first year of University and beyond, with advice and counselling given during the application and scholarship selection process. Academic, personal, and vocational goals are a key area of focus, as the guidance counsellor assists in honing the students’ abilities and skills into potential post-secondary options.

As the four-term, two course approach of Grade 11 and 12 mimics the academic semester structure of post-secondary education, students are prepared to manage their timetable, use their self-directed study skills, and benefit from the familiar “round-table” tutorial system. At Blyth Academy, students are taught to advocate for themselves, nurture a strong instructor-student relationship, and be active members of their school.

Our University Preparation Program students can take advantage of all of our campus facilities, including computer and science labs, student lounges, kitchenette facilities, student clubs, and intramural sports teams.

University Preparation Program: Academics

The academic year of the Blyth Academy University Preparation Program is divided into four terms of ten and a half weeks. This cutting-edge restructuring of the traditional academic school year has dramatic benefits for the student. Our University Preparation students take only two courses per term, as opposed to a more traditional semester setting (four courses a semester) or a full-year setting (eight courses daily spanning the entire academic year), meaning that our students are able to manage their academic workload much more effectively. Two-hour classes, taken five days a week, allow more time for in-depth review and for individual attention to our students on an ongoing basis.

Students select their courses at the start of the school term, and are given their schedule and room assignments. The third period is free for independent study, assignments, extracurricular activities, guidance counsellor visits, independent exercise programs, sport training, or other homework.

Students entering Grade 12 at Blyth Academy may only need six credits to graduate. In this case, Grade 12 students take two courses in Term 1, two courses in Term 2, two courses in Term 3, and then are eligible to graduate in April, leaving time to enjoy a victory lap, one of our exciting travel programs, or take a part-time job in advance of departing for University. If desired, Grade 12 students can take two Blyth Summer School credits during July and August before the start of the school year, allowing for graduation and all of its benefits as early as February.
