On February 22, we have an information session in Brienne M.'s (our student rep of the week) hometown of Leamington! Learn more about her below 👇👇

Blyth Academy Program(s) attended: Rome and the Greek Islands 🇮🇹️🇬🇷️

What is one piece of advice you would give to future Blyth Academy International Summers students? Definitely take every opportunity and make the most of it. Your month away is going to fly by and you are going to miss everything about it the day you get home. Every time you’re put in a group, engage with the people in it – I met so many amazing people. Take LOTS of pictures but also, put your camera down and take a look around. Make sure to dedicate your free time to visiting authentic places (restaurants, shops, monuments, etc.), you will be surprised with how much you learn and love in doing so. Also don’t hold back; go on excursions, introduce yourself to others, be you and you will get so much more out of the experience.

What inspired you to be a Student Rep? I am totally in love with what I experienced on my Blyth Academy program this summer! I applied to be a Student Rep so I could share my experiences and influence other to do what I did. I believe that everyone could take something valuable out of the experience whether it be academics, new friends, or new perspectives. 💙

Where is your #1 vacation destination? I love Europe: Spain, Italy and Portugal

Favourite TV show on Netflix right now? Riverdale, of course!

This year, the theme for Black History Month is Black Canadian Women: Stories of Strength, Courage, and Vision.
Mary Ann Shadd Cary was born in October 1823, the eldest of 13 children, to a free woman Harriet and a former Hessian soldier turned abolitionist Abraham Shadd. Mary grew up in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Her father worked for an abolitionist newspaper and is said to have aided escaped slaves traveling along the Underground Railroad. She was formally educated at a Quaker school and would go on to establish a school of her own in 1840, at the age of 17, where she taught Black children.
Following the passing of the Fugitive Slave Laws (1850), Mary moved to Ontario, Canada with her brother where she continued to educate the children of fugitive slaves who fled the United States to avoid capture.
In 1853, Mary Ann Shadd founded and published Canada's first antislavery newspaper the Provincial Freedman. The creation of the Provincial Freedman made Mary Ann Shadd the first African-American woman newspaper editor in North America and Canada's first woman publisher.
