Blyth Academy

Private Courses

All private courses will be delivered virtually until further notice.
Similar to our academically rigorous in-class lessons, our virtual classes are structured with set start and end times, and deadlines are established for assignments, tests, and final exams. Classes are live and conducted through ZOOM video chat using a shared screen. Our teachers plan and execute lessons using PowerPoint, videos and white boards in real-time, allowing for students to have their questions answered directly.

Blyth Academy Private Studies provide students in Grades 9 – 12 with a one-on-one learning experience in which teachers tailor the lessons to the needs and schedule of the individual student. Whether you are looking to reach ahead, fill in gaps from prior coursework, or seek mastery of a subject, Blyth Academy Private Studies allows you to earn a high school credit in our most personalized learning environment. Schedules can be tailored to fit almost any requirements, and the hourly rate compares favourably to tutoring costs, and unlike tutoring, results in a fully accredited course being earned.

Our teachers are equipped to deal with most learning accommodations, and are fully up-to-date with the latest Ontario Ministry of Education curricula and evaluation policies.

Blyth Academy campuses will consider applications from mature students (20 years +) to study in private courses; however, mature students must have an admissions interview with the campus before being enrolled in any course. Mature students are encouraged to consider enrolling in Blyth Academy Online courses as an alternative.Private courses are limited at some campuses. Please contact Private Course Coordinator Sarah Black at sarah.black@blytheducation.com if you have specific questions before registering.

Private & Repeat Course Policies

COURSE DURATION: Unless otherwise pre-arranged, all courses must be completed within the following schedule.

Full Course: 6 months
Repeat Course in a Private Setting: 3 months

ADDITIONAL HOURS: If students require additional hours beyond a Full Course or Repeat Course in a Private Setting for any reason, additional hours will be charged at a rate of $50/hour. The number of additional hours required will be determined in consultation between the Campus and the family and must be paid in full, prior to commencement.

CANCELLATION OF CLASSES & ABSENCES: If a student is unable to attend a prearranged private class or requires a change in their class time, he/she must advise the teacher via email a minimum of 24-hours in advance. In the absence of such notice, any time invested by the teacher will be deducted from remaining course time and will necessitate an additional fee to enable completion of the credit. Such calculations will be based on a $50 per hour teaching fee. The Campus will dictate the number of outstanding hours required and the student and family will be notified of any such additional fee required a minimum of 2 weeks prior to course completion.

Ready To Start?

Though our physical doors remain temporarily closed, the minds of our students stay open. Summer classes are continuing to meet on their regular daily schedules, in virtual classrooms with face-to-face instruction and peer interaction.  The Blyth Academy model of small class sizes, flexible scheduling and individualized approach have enabled us to remain faithful to our standards. Our commitment to ongoing and meaningful communication between school, teachers, students and families has been critical to this effort.

Although our students have transitioned into summer mode and COVID-19 restrictions have begun to loosen, we are looking ahead to what September will hold for our campuses and families.
We want to be clear - our preference and our priority is to get students back to our campuses, but we must ensure this is done in a safe and effective way. While we await official guidance from Public Health and the Ministry of Education, a "return to school" task force has been hard at work putting concrete operational plans in place for all likely scenarios. This includes a full return to campus with safeguards, a blended model of virtual and in-campus learning and the continuation of fully virtual classrooms. All scenarios will provide robust learning and live, daily instruction and interaction with teachers and peers.
With ten campuses across Ontario, we realize that each one of our schools is a unique space and community. We will be implementing across-the-board policies on hand washing, facility cleaning and social distancing measures. Each school is also prepared to pivot individually based on the guidance of local health authorities and to best serve students and families.
Our recent survey showed that over 80 per cent of Blyth Academy families are eager to return to campuses, and we are hard at work to prepare for this day. As September's scenario becomes clearer and more information becomes available, we will continue to communicate.
