Blyth Academy Thornhill

FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM (GRADES 9-10)

Your child’s Blyth Academy journey continues in our Foundations Program, where experienced and empathetic faculty build on the students’ academic success, while adding a complete and comprehensive life skills curriculum.

The Foundations Program is unique to Blyth Academy. It combines the development of important life skills with the Ontario Ministry mandated academic curriculum. In order to best prepare students for the road ahead, the program has been developed for students in Grades 9 and 10 to enrich and enhance their understanding of such important skills as:

  • Managing one’s wellness
  • Study skills
  • Financial literacy
  • Creative thinking
  • Planning & time management
  • Community services
  • Personal nutrition
  • Improving academic achievement

This program will allow our students to move to the rigorous academic challenges of Grades 11 and 12, armed with an excellent education, as well as the practical skills necessary for success after high school, and the ability to think independently, analytically, and critically.

ACADEMICS
The academic year of the Blyth Academy Foundation Program is divided into four terms of ten and a half weeks. This cutting-edge restructuring of the traditional academic school year has dramatic benefits for the student. Our Foundations students take only two courses per term, as opposed to a more traditional semester setting (four courses a semester) or a full-year setting (eight courses daily spanning the entire academic year), meaning that our students are able to manage their academic workload much more effectively. Two-hour classes, taken five days a week, allow more time for in-depth review and for individual attention to our students on an ongoing basis.

Students select their courses at the start of the school term and are given their schedule and room assignments. The life skills portion of the Foundation Program is taught in their third “spare” period.

Blyth Academy is ministry inspected, and adheres to all provincial standards, including the provision of an Ontario Provincial Report Card and official transcripts to post-secondary institutions. Blyth Academy follows the Ontario curriculum. To read more about the Ontario Curriculum, please select a Grade level below:

PHILOSOPHY

The Foundations Program provides unparalleled opportunities for personal and academic growth within the intermediate division. It seeks to provide a unique offering to students in Grades 9 and 10 that challenges the traditional organization of curriculum development and delivery in the intermediate grades. Traditional academic subjects like Math, Science, English, and Social Sciences at Blyth Academy Thornhill will be fully integrated with actual student experience, unlike at many schools where each class is often confined to the classroom and disconnected from the real lives of students. In taking this approach the Foundation Program ensures a curriculum that changes with the times and thus remains perpetually interesting and relevant to students each and every year.

Our Thornhill academy provides a wide offering of Study and Life skills in partnership with community organizations like the Personal Greatness Project.

Students who successfully complete the Foundations Program will move into their Senior years at Blyth Academy Thornhill, strongly connected to the mission of the school and its three truths:

  1. Care and empathy for students on academic, intellectual and personal levels is essential to success.
  2. Brilliant hands-on, experiential teaching in small classes engages students and produces the best results.
  3. Blyth Academy schools produce well-rounded, university-ready and life ready students by providing a full extracurricular program as well as community-involvement opportunities in their neighbourhoods and around the world.

UNIVERSITY PREPARATION PROGRAM (GRADES 11-12)

A student’s journey at Blyth Academy Thornhill culminates in the University Preparation Program for Grades 11 and 12. Here, preparing for post-secondary education is the primary focus, with increased focus on developing opinions, interpreting information, and independent learning. Our classrooms are designed to encourage participation in small group settings by accommodating regular round-table discussions.

Thanks to our centralized location, our campus is home to a diverse group of students. Our experienced guidance counsellor take a vested interest in our students’well being by offering workshops for both personal and academic growth. They work with each student to prepare them for the first year of University and beyond, with advice and counselling given during the application and scholarship selection process. Academic, personal, and vocational goals are a key area of focus, as the guidance counsellor assists in honing the students’ abilities and skills into potential post-secondary options.

As the four-term, two-course approach of Grade 11 and 12 mimics the academic semester structure of post-secondary education, students are prepared to manage their timetable, use their self-directed study skills, and benefit from the familiar “round-table” tutorial system. At Blyth Academy, students are taught to advocate for themselves, nurture a strong instructor-student relationship, and be active members of their school.

Students entering grade 12 at Blyth Academy Thornhill may only need six credits to graduate. In this case, grade 12 students take two courses in Term 1, two courses in Term 2, two courses in Term 3, and then are eligible to graduate in April, leaving time to enjoy a victory lap, the ability to go on one of our exciting travel programs, or can obtain a part-time job before going off to university. If desired, grade 12 students can take two Blyth Academy summer school credits during July and August before the start of the school year, allowing for graduation and all of its benefits as early as February.
