Blyth Academy Burlington partners with Spectrum Airways; offers pilot training to high school students

In an exciting new partnership unique to the Halton area, Blyth Academy Burlington is working with Spectrum Airways to provide high school students with the ability to earn their pilot’s licence and diploma at the same time!

“The new partnership between Blyth Academy Burlington and Spectrum Airways is a one of a kind program that allows students to gain their OSSD while simultaneously earning flight training hours and instruction towards their Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) and Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL),” says Ian Hughes, Principal of Blyth Academy Burlington. “The program will give our students the opportunity to obtain their licences while still in high school, giving them a head start on the requirements necessary for a career as a pilot.”

Starting this September, Blyth Academy Burlington students in Grades 11 and 12 can combine their full-time studies with flight training at Spectrum Airways, earning a high school education at the same time as a Commercial Pilot Licence.

By the end of Grade 11 (year one), students will have had the opportunity to earn their Private Pilot Licence (PPL) along with eight Ontario high school credits. In Grade 12 (year two), they will work toward the completion of their Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and OSSD.

“This early start, combined with the additional training time that we have built into the program will give our students a very solid foundation for their careers,” says Brian Huston, Flight Instructor for Spectrum Airways. “We are unaware of any other program that will ensure an opportunity for a rapid head start for aspiring pilots while they also complete their high school education.”

This program will also provide graduates with continued advantages after completion: local options after graduation include instructor positions at Spectrum Airways. These initial pilot jobs allow newly licenced commercial pilots to earn the additional flight hours and experience necessary to become eligible for a career flying on regional airlines such as WestJet and Porter.

With Blyth Academy and Spectrum Airways, the sky’s the limit!

Blyth Academy is a private high school in Ontario with ten campuses. Each school is designed to be a community of 100-200 students and has truly small class sizes. Blyth Academy offers a comprehensive full-time program, as well as night school, private courses, summer school, and online classes.

Spectrum Airways, based out of Burlington Executive Airport, has been in the business of pilot certification for more than 40 years, and provides flight training programs including the Private Pilot License and Commercial Pilot License, along with several specialized training programs like Night Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, Instrument Rating/Multi-Instrument Rating and Instructor Rating.

Though our physical doors remain temporarily closed, the minds of our students stay open. Summer classes are continuing to meet on their regular daily schedules, in virtual classrooms with face-to-face instruction and peer interaction.  The Blyth Academy model of small class sizes, flexible scheduling and individualized approach have enabled us to remain faithful to our standards. Our commitment to ongoing and meaningful communication between school, teachers, students and families has been critical to this effort.

Although our students have transitioned into summer mode and COVID-19 restrictions have begun to loosen, we are looking ahead to what September will hold for our campuses and families.
We want to be clear - our preference and our priority is to get students back to our campuses, but we must ensure this is done in a safe and effective way. While we await official guidance from Public Health and the Ministry of Education, a "return to school" task force has been hard at work putting concrete operational plans in place for all likely scenarios. This includes a full return to campus with safeguards, a blended model of virtual and in-campus learning and the continuation of fully virtual classrooms. All scenarios will provide robust learning and live, daily instruction and interaction with teachers and peers.
With ten campuses across Ontario, we realize that each one of our schools is a unique space and community. We will be implementing across-the-board policies on hand washing, facility cleaning and social distancing measures. Each school is also prepared to pivot individually based on the guidance of local health authorities and to best serve students and families.
Our recent survey showed that over 80 per cent of Blyth Academy families are eager to return to campuses, and we are hard at work to prepare for this day. As September's scenario becomes clearer and more information becomes available, we will continue to communicate.
