A Letter From Your Principal

What a fantastic week! I would like to thank you all for your kind words of support, appreciation and understanding during this transition to an online school! While it has definitely been a whirlwind of a week, it appears that we are all getting more comfortable with the new norm! Our virtual classrooms are engaging, our attendance is near perfect and our students are displaying a work ethic over and above what we have previously seen! We really appreciate all of your support and understanding as our team has worked tirelessly to design a program that allows our students to continue thriving academically! I would like to recognize all of our team for their efforts! It takes very strong and committed individuals to be able to take on a massive change like this in such a short period of time! You have done truly remarkable things and I thank you very much for your commitment!

As we continue to become more comfortable with what has become the new norm, we will be increasing our fitness and sport-related content! You have all been added to the Fitness Training and Sport-Specific Skills Edsby groups which we encourage you to check every day!

Fitness Training Edsby Group
Each day a fitness workout is posted with links to YouTube clips for each exercise. We encourage students to stick to a routine of waking up, completing a workout and attending their classes to start with a fresh mind. We also encourage students to post pictures and/or video clips of their workouts to motivate one another! They are also welcome to send them to me to be posted! Parents who are home are also welcome to utilize our fitness program!

Sport-Specific Skills Group
We have begun posting sport-specific skills drills in this group for students to continue to develop these skills while at home. Our Hockey and Soccer instructors will be creating videos of drills that you can work on at home. We have posted our first one from Stevie McSwain focusing on Stickhandling Skills! We will also be using this Edsby group to post information about our Guest Speakers and encourage students to post pictures and/or videos of them working on skill development at home to motivate one another!

Though our physical doors remain temporarily closed, the minds of our students stay open. Summer classes are continuing to meet on their regular daily schedules, in virtual classrooms with face-to-face instruction and peer interaction.  The Blyth Academy model of small class sizes, flexible scheduling and individualized approach have enabled us to remain faithful to our standards. Our commitment to ongoing and meaningful communication between school, teachers, students and families has been critical to this effort.

Although our students have transitioned into summer mode and COVID-19 restrictions have begun to loosen, we are looking ahead to what September will hold for our campuses and families.
We want to be clear - our preference and our priority is to get students back to our campuses, but we must ensure this is done in a safe and effective way. While we await official guidance from Public Health and the Ministry of Education, a "return to school" task force has been hard at work putting concrete operational plans in place for all likely scenarios. This includes a full return to campus with safeguards, a blended model of virtual and in-campus learning and the continuation of fully virtual classrooms. All scenarios will provide robust learning and live, daily instruction and interaction with teachers and peers.
With ten campuses across Ontario, we realize that each one of our schools is a unique space and community. We will be implementing across-the-board policies on hand washing, facility cleaning and social distancing measures. Each school is also prepared to pivot individually based on the guidance of local health authorities and to best serve students and families.
Our recent survey showed that over 80 per cent of Blyth Academy families are eager to return to campuses, and we are hard at work to prepare for this day. As September's scenario becomes clearer and more information becomes available, we will continue to communicate.
